In 1967, the Supreme Court unanimously overturned state bans on interracial marriage, aka miscegenation, in the appropriately-named Loving v. Virginia. Unfortunately, Ms. Loving has passed away. Last year, in a rare public statement, Ms. Loving said:
Surrounded as I am now by wonderful children and grandchildren, not a day goes by that I don’t think of Richard and our love, our right to marry, and how much it meant to me to have that freedom to marry the person precious to me, even if others thought he was the “wrong kind of person” for me to marry. I believe all Americans, no matter their race, no matter their sex, no matter their sexual orientation, should have that same freedom to marry. Government has no business imposing some people’s religious beliefs over others. Especially if it denies people’s civil rights.
I am still not a political person, but I am proud that Richard’s and my name is on a court case that can help reinforce the love, the commitment, the fairness, and the family that so many people, black or white, young or old, gay or straight seek in life. I support the freedom to marry for all. That’s what Loving, and loving, are all about.
I’ve written before about how the arguments against gay marriage were either identical to those opposed to interracial marriage or just really, really stupid. And it’s true! Let’s fill in the blanks to prove it!
“Almighty God created the [genders, male and female], and he [made them different]. The fact that he separated the [genders] shows that he … intend[ed] for the[m] to [complement each other].”
“[Same-sex] marriage between [2 men or 2 women] is repulsive and averse to every sentiment of pure American spirit. Let us uproot and exterminate now this debasing, ultra-demoralizing, un-American and inhuman leprosy.”
No difference.

I’d do it myself but I won’t be old enough. If there are any good Democrats interested in running, please let me know about them so I can start campaigning and fundraising for them now. Casey is a god-damn embarrassment, just like his father.

A 3 act play is our tale today!
ACT 1: Joe Klein [aka Joke Line], Time Magazine’s “liberal” columnist, publishes an article in the print edition bashing Democrats over their FISA legislation.
ACT 2: Glenn Greenwald takes apart Klein’s article and shows that it is false; the bill has specific provisions allowing the actions that Klein claimed were prohibited.
ACT 3: Klein offers several weak defenses on Time’s blog, ultimately culminating in the following: “I have neither the time nor legal background to figure out who’s right.”

I’ve been busy with life, primarily school work. I intend to try and rant full speed soonish, because I know you all love that so much. In the meantime, please go read this story. I’ll wait.
*whistles idly* you back? Good.
To those parents behind ‘Josh’: GTFO, STFU, and DIAF. In case you haven’t picked up enough internet slang in pushing a 13 year old to kill herself, allow me to translate. Get the FUCK OUT, Shut the FUCK UP, and DIE in a FIRE. You are scum. You should have your own children taken away from you so you don’t threaten their own well-being or lives. You should be thrown in prison for, at least, negligent homicide.
Perhaps worse, as one of the commenters worded it, you are guilty of “moral cluelessness”; I would go farther. You are guilty of moral absence. At no point, over those several months, did you not think “what we are doing is wrong”? Did you not think about the consequences? Did you not think about the ethical character, the moral character of your actions? Did you not think?
As someone who was near-suicidally depressed at the age of 19, let alone an impressionable 13 year old, I have never been more thankful for the adult friends I have made. You people are amazing and I love you all. Nothing like pure, Banal Evil to make one appreciate the Goodness of one’s friends.
