My internet adaptor for my laptop is broken, so I’m out of touch except while at work, where my time is, obviously, limited. So, sorry; be back ASAP.

Mildred Loving Is Dead; Why Her Case Still Matters

May 6th, 2008 by Steve

In 1967, the Supreme Court unanimously overturned state bans on interracial marriage, aka miscegenation, in the appropriately-named Loving v. Virginia. Unfortunately, Ms. Loving has passed away. Last year, in a rare public statement, Ms. Loving said:

Surrounded as I am now by wonderful children and grandchildren, not a day goes by that I don’t think of Richard and our love, our right to marry, and how much it meant to me to have that freedom to marry the person precious to me, even if others thought he was the “wrong kind of person” for me to marry. I believe all Americans, no matter their race, no matter their sex, no matter their sexual orientation, should have that same freedom to marry. Government has no business imposing some people’s religious beliefs over others. Especially if it denies people’s civil rights.

I am still not a political person, but I am proud that Richard’s and my name is on a court case that can help reinforce the love, the commitment, the fairness, and the family that so many people, black or white, young or old, gay or straight seek in life. I support the freedom to marry for all. That’s what Loving, and loving, are all about.

I’ve written before about how the arguments against gay marriage were either identical to those opposed to interracial marriage or just really, really stupid. And it’s true! Let’s fill in the blanks to prove it!

“Almighty God created the [genders, male and female], and he [made them different]. The fact that he separated the [genders] shows that he … intend[ed] for the[m] to [complement each other].”
“[Same-sex] marriage between [2 men or 2 women] is repulsive and averse to every sentiment of pure American spirit. Let us uproot and exterminate now this debasing, ultra-demoralizing, un-American and inhuman leprosy.”

No difference.

Registering And Voting By Absentee

March 17th, 2008 by Steve

Just a reminder for all you kids out there that the registration date for Pennsylvania is March 24th, next Monday! If you’re going to be out of state for the election itself, as I am, you should get your absentee ballot. To do that, download the Absentee Ballot Application here. After that, you should go here to find your County Contact Info and mail them the completed application. You MUST get your ballot application to them by April 15th, and they also MUST have the filled-out ballot by April 18th (side note: that’s ridiculous). Don’t wait too long! Make sure you can VOTE in this historic election!

With Edwards’ withdrawal from the race today, Political Games officially endorses Barack Obama for President.

P.S. If he wins, I called it.

I know, I know, long time no post… something to read for you all

November 20th, 2007 by Steve

I’ve been busy with life, primarily school work. I intend to try and rant full speed soonish, because I know you all love that so much. In the meantime, please go read this story. I’ll wait.

*whistles idly* you back? Good.

To those parents behind ‘Josh’: GTFO, STFU, and DIAF. In case you haven’t picked up enough internet slang in pushing a 13 year old to kill herself, allow me to translate. Get the FUCK OUT, Shut the FUCK UP, and DIE in a FIRE. You are scum. You should have your own children taken away from you so you don’t threaten their own well-being or lives. You should be thrown in prison for, at least, negligent homicide.

Perhaps worse, as one of the commenters worded it, you are guilty of “moral cluelessness”; I would go farther. You are guilty of moral absence. At no point, over those several months, did you not think “what we are doing is wrong”? Did you not think about the consequences? Did you not think about the ethical character, the moral character of your actions? Did you not think?

As someone who was near-suicidally depressed at the age of 19, let alone an impressionable 13 year old, I have never been more thankful for the adult friends I have made. You people are amazing and I love you all. Nothing like pure, Banal Evil to make one appreciate the Goodness of one’s friends.

Saddened

June 2nd, 2007 by Steve

I don’t think I linked to his work enough, but I was stunned and saddened by the announcement that blogger Steve Gilliard has passed away. He was 41 years old. I read his blog, though probably not enough, and he was always one with a unique voice and view on issues both political and personal; you could tell he had a kind heart. My condolences to his family and friends.

I’m Going To Try To Blog More

March 11th, 2007 by Steve

Really. I mean it this time.

Ok, so a quick round up of what might possibly be the most important story right now. If you haven’t been following this, don’t worry; it’s only one of the latest scandals coming out of the Bush White House. Surprise. You’ll have to find more detailed background elsewhere; basically, Gonzalez fired 7 or 8 or 9 U.S. Attorneys since the 06 elections [which in and of itself is unprecedented], several of whom had been working public corruption cases. Then, using an unknown proviso in the Patriot Act slipped in by a Specter staffer during House-Senate discrepancy committee, replaced them without requiring the Senate’s approval. Oh, and a couple of the replacements suggested were Bush campaign workers/donors. With me so far? Ok, it gets better.

One of the fired claims to have been contacted (at his house!) by Sen. Pete Domenici [R-NM] and Rep. Heather Wilson [R-Big Surprise] just before the 06 elections to ask about a corruption investigation into a state Democrat and pressured him to hurry things up. Wilson barely won reelection in one of the closer races this fall. Another of the attorneys also claims that the chief of staff for another congressperson, Rep. Doc Hastings [R-WA] contacted him as well before the 06 elections to ask something similar. The attorney terminated the conversation before the questions got too pushy, but was unnerved by the whole event.

During Tuesday’s congressional hearing, two of the attorneys confirmed a newspaper report that the Attorney General’s chief of staff threatened one or more of the attorneys that the gloves would come off and more, personal information would come out about them if they continued to stir controversy. The DoJ denies this. Yeah, cause we know this Administration would never do that. Just ask Joe Wilson’s wife, Valerie Plame OH MY GOD what have I said?? [/Colbert]

The attorney from NM also recounted a conversation with the DoJ official who made the calls firing them [he resigned a few days ago, btw. Spending more time with his family or something] in which he asked why he was being fired. The official’s reply: “I don’t know and I don’t want to know. All I know is that this came from on high.”

So yeah. This could be one of the biggest scandals of this Administration, and that’s saying something. There are calls for Gonzales to resign, for Bush to fire him, or for Congress to impeach him. I obviously think it’s well-deserved at this point. This whole thing is insane.

Local Republican Thuggery

October 13th, 2006 by Steve

Election-related thuggery has become an increasingly common aspect of campaigns in recent years. It’s not just the national Republicans and their supporters, though. The local candidate for State Rep that I’ve been volunteering for, Casey Roncaglione in PA’s 164th, recently experienced that first hand.

The 164th includes parts of Upper Darby, Drexel Hill, East Lansdowne, and Millbourne. For those not familiar with Upper Darby politics, everyone down to the dogcatcher is a Republican. The incumbent, Mario Civera, has been a state representative for 26 years. He’s been essentially unopposed for at least the past two decades, but Casey has actually made a bit of a run at him. At the very least, Casey has a noticeable lawnsign presence, something previous challengers simply did not.

Some of those signs started disappearing. Thanks to the vigilence of the Casey team, the crook was spotted and reported to the police, who stopped him and found several of Casey’s lawn signs in his trunk. Surprise, the thug was an Upper Darby city official! A full investigation is pending. In the meantime, getting this out to the media is very important. The people of Upper Darby (self included) deserve to know about the corruption within their city government. Casey’s press release with more information on this crime can be found here.
