Most of you probably don’t know David Neiwert. You should.

Neiwert is a freelance journalist living in Seattle Washington. He was born in Idaho. He has done work for MSNBC, Salon.com, The WaPo, and his own blog. Mr. Neiwert has won the National Press Club Award for Distinguished Online Journalism (2000) for his MSNBC.com article on domestic terrorism. He has also won back-to-back Koufax awards (2003, 2004) for Rush, Newspeak, and Fascism and The Rise of Pseudo Fascism. He has also written 3 books, In God’s Country: The Patriot Movement and the Pacific Northwest, Death on the Fourth of July: The Story of a Killing, a Trial, and Hate Crime in America, and soon-to-be-released Strawberry Days: How Internment Destroyed a Japanese American Community. His work is really, really good. Go read it.

Big Business Kills Rock in Philly

February 25th, 2005 by Steve

Ok, so music in and of itself has already been beaten to a bloody pulp by the recording labels and big media corporations, but it seems they’re not content with that. Today, WPLY 100.3, the beloved alternative rock station Y100, was taken off the air and replaced with The Beat 100 (or something like that). Why does this suck, even for non-rock fans?

This marks the continued dilution of options in radio listening options. Yesterday, Philadelphia received (from Philly-, NJ-, and Delaware-based stations) 5 predominately rap/R&B stations, 1 classic rock station, 1 oldies station, 3 pop/mix stations, 1 country station, 2 regular rock stations (more “grunge” and “mainstream”), and 1 alternative rock station. That’s a decent mixing, even if it is heavy on the rap/R&B stations. However, there are now SIX rap/R&B stations, and only 2 modern rock stations, neither of which are alternative rock. Hell, there’s almost as many country stations in Philly now as rock stations, and frankly, country is very, very small here.

You get the idea: I’m mad as hell. Beyond that, this is a stupid business move. The rap/R&B section is already saturated with content and stations. What’s the point of having more? You’re not likely to steal off many of 98.9’s, 103.9’s, 102.1’s, 96.5’s, or 97.5’s listeners. Alternative Rock, on the other hand, is a genre almost non-existent in this area. Y100 had hundreds of thousands of loyal listeners, and hundreds of thousands more who tuned in sporadically (like me). So 100.3 is probably going to have less listeners as a rap station than an alternative station. So wtf is the company thinking?

Anyway, even if you don’t care, do me a big favor and go sign the petition and check out the link to Y100 online; yeah, the producers/dj’s decided “fuck this” and created an online radio station. It only allows a certain amount of free users, but if you have the cash you can get prefered membership and listen in.

Spongebob Update and Extended Commentary

February 19th, 2005 by Steve

All I can say is wow. This is brilliant, quite frankly, and hilarious.

Ok, but enough of the kicks and giggles. Let’s talk about what’s really going on. As Dobson and his group have screeched since their accusation was made, he never called Spongebob gay. And that’s true. He didn’t. I’ve never accused him of doing such, and the people writing the satires haven’t accused him of that either. What Dobson (and the nutjobs who follow him) did was claim that Spongebob was being used by the Homosexual Agenda [sic] to promote their message; specifically, he and the other cartoon characters were being used by We Are Family (hereafter referred to by WAF). WAF’s video, it should be noted, never actually mentioned their website, so how Dobson & Co. connects Spongebob to this whole mess I really don’t understand (but Michael Moore’s an insane conspiracy theorist for suggesting Bush’s old TANG buddy, who received bin Laden funds, gave said money to the Shrub for his business disasters. Hell, that’s less insane than this. Ok, back to the topic.). However, if you were to go to WAF’s site, and you did some prolific searching, you would eventually find a link to http://www.tolerance.org and that site’s Tolerance Pledge (something I have signed, by the way), which includes a one line reference to sexual orientation. Tolerance.org is run by the Southern Poverty Law Center, which is certainly not a left-wing group (trust me, I disagree with plenty of their articles), though they often are liberal in some of their approaches. Somehow, WAF are now part of the Homosexual Agenda [again, sic].

So what’s this really about? … Well, you’ll have to wait until tomorrow. Cause I gotta catch some sleep-eye. I’m tired and sick. Suspense!

Holy Crap….

February 11th, 2005 by Steve

ok, I have some really, really terrifying news. What do you call someone with the power to waive any law at any time for any (or no) reason, without possiblity of legislative, judicial, citizen, or any other check or balance?

Why, the Homeland Security Secretary, of course! This isn’t a joke. This is serious. Section 102 of the recently approved HR 418 gives the Secretary of HS this power. If this passes the Senate, then we will have a quasi-dictatorship, or hell, a real one. Interestingly enough, a Democrat introduced an amendment which would have stricken Section 102 and ONLY Section 102, but 220 Republicans (96% of those present) and 23 Democrats (those fucking god-damn appeasing moronic whores) voted against that amendment. Why? What logical excuse could you give for voting against an amendment that opposes abuse of power?

Call your Senators. Tell them to strike this section DOA. Bush sure as hell won’t veto it; he hasn’t vetoed any bill yet. Also, search around to see if your representative voted for it (and against the amendment). If they did, give them a god-damn piece of your mind, and ask them what the fuck is wrong with them.

son of a…

February 10th, 2005 by Steve

alright, so I’m browsing google news, U.S., and I see that Bush triples tsunami aid amounts, to 950 million. And I think “hey, that’s great news! way to go!” Then I see the story directly beneath it: Bush to give 100 million… to Poland. I’m thinking “Poland? Why Poland…. oh! maybe because the Polish people are still fairly poor and not very well off due to the collapse of the communist authoritarian governments 15 years ago”… then I see what we’e giving the money for. Military improvements.

What. The. Fuck. That’s bullshit! argh! Why are we giving so much damn money for military improvements, but when it comes to 200,000 people dying, we only offer more money after intense domestic and international pressure (remember, initial offer: 15 million, then bumped to 35, then 350). God, what an asshole.

This Made My Day

February 7th, 2005 by Steve

Ok, the last 2 days have totally sucked and blown, so I’ve been looking everywhere for some sort of comic/distraction relief. I’d have to say that the best part today was when I decided to mosey over to Bungie.Net and see their site header. It reads “Welcome to Bungie Studios: Satisfying Your Mom Since 1991″. Great stuff.
