It’s Not Just About Marriage

December 1st, 2004 by Steve

The debate about allowing gays to marry is not just about marriage, despite what some “pro-family values” [aka: pro forcing-my-family’s-values-down-others-throats] might tell you. And it’s not just about the thousands of various benefits a couple gets from being married (not all of them economic, either). The anti-gay community has made it abundantly clear that they not only oppose their marriage, but even, for example, showing affection at a baseball game. I’m not kidding. Someone said that. From Congress, I believe.

This latest case, however, is too despicable and stunning for words, but I’ll try. Essentially, 2 networks have decided not to air an ad by the United Church of Christ which included oblique references to homosexuality (the over-riding theme of the ad was that they, “like Christ”, accepted everyone into their church). The reason?

“Because this commercial touches on the exclusion of gay couples and other minority groups by other individuals and organizations,” reads an explanation from CBS, “and the fact the Executive Branch has recently proposed a Constitutional Amendment to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman, this spot is unacceptable for broadcast on the [CBS and UPN] networks.”

“Uniter not a divider” my ass. Nice work Georgie. ‘Course, this is what your base wants, so…

Wait. An ad making a reference to gays is “unacceptable”, but we’re allowed to run MNF skits featuring naked women jumping to the arms of football players? [for the record, I don’t care much about that, just making a point] And we’re allowed to run ads calling presidential candidates traitors and comparing senators to both bin Laden and Hussein (Max Cleland) ? And don’t try to distract attention from the real issue here by mentioning those 2 ads those idiots submitted to MoveOn.org; they were 2 of thousands of submissions, and were removed from contention after they were discovered. They never aired, though the winning ad was barred from being run by, you guessed it, CBS for being “too controversial”. I guess talking about items in the public discourse on the public airways is “controversial”… Hypocrisy at its finest!
