Why I Hate Bush: Authoritarian Perspective
June 23rd, 2004 by SteveIgnoring the “there should be limits to freedom” and “[Being President] would be a lot easier if it were a dictatorship” quotes, this is something which, frankly, scares the crap out of me. Here’s the scariest quote:
“I accept the legal conclusion of the attorney general and the Department of Justice that I have the authority under the Constitution to suspend Geneva.”
Where the FUCK does it say that in the Constitution?! Where?!?! Believe me, I’ve read my Constitution, and it’s not in there. The closest thing I’ve found is that the President is supposed to “uphold the Law.” And, as I said before, “the Law” includes all Treaties signed… such as Geneva.
Ignoring the legal issue (where I think it’s pretty clear Bush is wrong), who the hell wants a President who thinks s/he is “above” the Law, and will put slap down laws and freedoms… supposedly to “protect” democracy. That’s known as “doublethink.” Those are two contradictory statements. Thinking them both at the same time requires you to have been brainwashed to doublethink. If you don’t know what I’m talking about: 1984, now! Read it!
Argh. I’m just pissed off. I’m going to go read. I’ll be back to rant later.
