Crazy Idea

June 30th, 2004 by Steve

I was watching G4TechTV, specifically Arena, where a team of gamers compete, and I was thinking…

hell, I bet I could come up with 3 other gamers to get on that. Most of my friends play a good enough mix of games that we could perform decently. The only flaw is that Arena focuses on shooter games and, well, my shooter experiences boil down to Halo, a couple hours of Battlefield 1942, and a couple hours of one of the original Unreal games. Oh, and some Socom. I’m sure I could adapt if needed, but our odds of winning… prolly not that great. But what the hell, right?

Why I Hate Bush: “Pre-emptive” Perspective

June 28th, 2004 by Steve

Another reason why Americans should vote against our current President on November 2nd is the so-called “Bush Doctrine.” What is this “Bush Doctrine”?

The War on Terrorism will be protracted, lasting perhaps decades. There will be hot wars punctuating the ongoing War on Terrorism. Covert actions by the cia and other arms of the government will once again be legitimised, and these will be kept secret from the world and the US people. This protracted war will be fought with coalitions of other nations if possible, by the US alone if necessary. Probably, these coalitions will shift and change with the changing targets. Curtailment of democratic rights is necessary to protect the United States.

[emphasis mine]. This goes back to my Authoritarian Perspective, and I’m not going to dwell on that more. I want to move on to the application of the “Bush Doctrine.” For under this Doctrine, the War on Iraq was supposedly planned and justified (even though it had long been planned by PNAC, a lobbying group and think-tank begun by neoconservatives including Dick Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz, and other key members of the Bush Administration back in 1997). Iraq was deemed as “a threat to America and an ally of al-Quada.” What was the basis for this invasion? I can assure you this: It was not “bringing democracy” to Iraq. Considering the fact that we were supposedly in the middle of fighting a war on terrorism, “spreading democracy” is a poor excuse to take on a two-bit dictator. Granted, Saddam was an evil and vicious war criminal, but this was not the basis for our invasion. No; those of us without rose-colored glasses remember that we invaded Iraq to stop them from using their Weapons of Mass Destruction on us (which have never been found) and to disrupt the supposed terrorist bases that were there (which didn’t exist when we invaded, though the current attacks on coalition forces in now used retroactively to justify the invasion).

Why, then, did we really invade Iraq? The obvious answer is oil, but this is far too simple of a reason (though it likely did play a factor, as the no-bid contracts to Halliburton and others suggest). A careful reading of the PNAC documents reveal what the neoconservative movement is really after: power. PNAC does not merely call for an invasion of Iraq; in the September 2000 document titled “Rebuilding America’s Defenses [sic],” PNAC called for the invasion of several countries, the establishment of military bases within these countries, and the installment of U.S.-friendly governments. These countries included (but were not limited to) Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, and North Korea, among others. Afghanistan was the first to fall, though I do not necessarily fault the administration for that war (though I do fault them for their subsequent post-war execution; the warlords are running the country at the moment). Next we set our sights on Iraq, EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS NO LINK BETWEEN SADDAM AND TERROR. He was a dictator, NOT a terrorist. My friend who sticks his tongue up Bush’s ass for pleasure informed me that saddam “was a terrorist who happened to be a dictator.” I’m still not sure what definition of terrorist he was using., but regardless, that doesn’t make sense. What happened immediately after we successfully conquered Iraq? Before the insurgency, when we had no WMDs? Officials of the U.S. government, all the way up to Cheney, began to claim that Saddam had sent them to Syria (a charge since proven false). Syrai: ring a bell? It should; it too was on the list of nations to-be-invaded. We had already declared Iran and N. Korea “evil,” and without U.N. intervention on behalf of Iran and N. Korea’s declaration that they already had a nuclear weapon (oops), they would have been next. The only reason that Syrai didn’t get the shock-and-awe treatment was the quagmire that quickly took hold in Iraq.

Let’s say Bush wins in November, and the Republicans maintain their hold in Congress. What happens next?

Without any re-election restraints, Bush and Co. will “take off the gloves.” First things first, as many others have documented, there will be a reinstatement of the draft. Thus, 18-to-26 year olds of both genders, and with disregard to college status, will become an unwilling part of the Bush War Machine. The Neocons will finally be able to have the men and resources necessary to finish their plans. While keeping massive troops entrenched in Iraq, more troops will de deployed to occupy one of the 3 remaining countries left on the list, with Syria being the most likely target, Iran running a close 2nd, and N. Korea making a distant 3rd. Death tolls will climb through the charts, terror attacks will increase even more than they did in 2003, and the United States will dig her “freedom-loving” talons into the backs of more third-world countries. With a ballooning military and discrecionary budget, the Republicans will “regretably” cut “welfare spending”; roads, education, unemployment, Medicare, Social Security, state grants, etc. Foreign aid will be greatly reduced, and already-poor countries will spiral farther into poverty. Continuing tax cuts at home will widen the gap between rich and poor.

And somehow, it’ll all be Clinton’s fault.

Eugene Quotes! Edited and Explained

June 24th, 2004 by Steve

So wow… I’d actually forgotten about this post. Apparently [according to all-knowing blog overseer Mike] there was some sort of controversy on another blog regarding these quotes. I’m going to give an explanation, and then the post as it originally appeared.

You see, most of these quotes are from 10th or 11th grade. While none of them are fabricated, a few of them are taken out of context; several of them are not serious; even more of them were said off-the-cuff without much thought being put into them. I’m pretty sure I can safely declare none of them are actually believed by the speaker.

So, Euge… I want to apologize for any personal anguish caused by this. This wasn’t done for malicious/hurtful purposes; this was done for a good laugh. And not at you, either. Especially now, in hindsight, these are freaking hilarious [especially the banter with Rigg; I always enjoyed that]. However, as has been my policy, I don’t delete things from my blog. Ever. So these will stand, but hopefully with this explanation nobody will throw these back in your face in a serious manner. If they do, send them my way and I’ll straighten them out.

That said… the post as it originally stood:

For anyone who’s looked closely at my profile, you’ll notice there’s a subsection labeled “Conservative Corner”. In actuality, it’s a list of quotes from my friend at school, eugene. Only one [or most] of these said quotes is taken out of context, because it’s really funny and non-political [and hopefully we can all enjoy the political ones too]. I think even Eugene will appreciate that one.

Instead of putting them in my obscure profile, I’m going to put them here: in my obscure blog. Enjoy!

-”Who cares about the environment? It won’t be gone for another 50 years, and I’ll be dead by then.”
-”The environment is not fragile.”
-”Global warming isn’t real.”
-”Bush is too liberal.”
-”If you like honesty, then why don’t you like Bush?”
-”A president doesn’t need to be intelligent!”
-”Love has very little to do with marriage.”
-”Homosexuality has only been around since the 70’s.”
-”Affirmative action is worse than slavery.”
-”We shouldn’t let the Hispanics in.”
-”Women were better off before feminism.”
-”Welfare should be given to the rich so the poor will work harder.”
-”We shouldn’t focus on failures, the scum on welfare.”
-”The California economy is all Davis’ fault….. the U.S. economy has nothing to do with Bush!”
-”Are there any hot girls at Penn State?”
-”I understand her point of view; she’s a loser!”
-”A liberal actor can’t play a conservative!”
-”[Reagan] saying to his wife ‘I would come across the country for you’ makes him seem like a girl.”
-”I won’t condemn Gibson’s film [the Passion] until it comes out ….. We have enough evidence to condemn the Reagan movie!”
-”Black people walk too slow in the hallways.”
-”It’s important to conform to society to succeed in life.”
-Explaining why it is all a woman’s fault if she gets pregnant: “It’s like this. If a guy asks a girl for a candy bar, and she gives it to him, but then she gets hungry, it’s her fault she’s hungry.”
-Me: “Since we’re liberating the people of Iraq, shouldn’t we be liberating people living under other dictatorships, like in South America?”
Eugene: “It’s not in our best interests to liberate those people.”
-”Even poor people can afford microwave ovens and cable tv.”
-Franco: “You weren’t hugged as a child, were you?”
-Eugene: “You can’t reason with liberals.”
Rigg: “Yeah, because conservatives are SO well known for being open-minded.”
Me: “Now hold on. I just discovered this morning that, for Earth Day, Eugene will be cleaning up a river.”
Rigg: “What, is he getting NHS credit for it or something? [yes] He’s probably going to piss in it the whole time.”
-Eugene: “Why do the Vietnamese put “Viet” before all of their things [Viet Cong, Viet minh, et al]? America doesn’t do that! We don’t call things ‘Ameriplane’ or ‘Ameritank’!”
The entire class: “U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Airforce, U.S. Airways, American Airways, Amtrack, Amerihealth, Ameritrade, [et al ad naseum].”
-Eugene: “Who cares about French?”
Mr. Rigg: “As soon as Eugene lowers his swastika, we can move on.”
Mr. Rigg (continuing with heavy sarcasm): “I can see you’re a tolerant person Eugene… I can’t wait to see you grow up with that steeltrap mind of yours.”
-Eugene: “You forgot the accent on Genet.”
Mr. Rigg adds accent incorrectly
Eugene: “It’s still wrong.”
Mr. Rigg: “I did that on purpose just to see how far your anal tendencies went.”

EDIT: Here are some more!

-Eugene: “People don’t go dressed to work dirty or colorfully!”
Me: “Colorfully?”
Eugene: “Shutup! I hate you guys!”
-”In your opinion, did girls become better-looking in college, or did they get fat?”
-”I think Bush is like Lincoln!”
-”You know what I want to do in college? Start smoking.”
-”Second-hand smoke doesn’t cause anything.”

MORE EDIT:

-Rigg: “Eugene, stop studying chemistry!”
Eugene: “It’s not chem. it’s a history thing I bought from borders.”
Rigg: “Borders? You know they’re communists, right?”
Eugene: “Well, yeh, but they didn’t make it.”
Rigg: “Who did?”
Eugene: “[Company name].”
Rigg: “Notorious communist group. I’d burn that.”
Eugene: “I can’t-”
Rigg: “What, it wouldn’t cause enough pollution?”
Eugene: “Well, yeh, but it’s also laminated.”

Why I Hate Bush: Authoritarian Perspective

June 23rd, 2004 by Steve

Ignoring the “there should be limits to freedom” and “[Being President] would be a lot easier if it were a dictatorship” quotes, this is something which, frankly, scares the crap out of me. Here’s the scariest quote:

“I accept the legal conclusion of the attorney general and the Department of Justice that I have the authority under the Constitution to suspend Geneva.”

Where the FUCK does it say that in the Constitution?! Where?!?! Believe me, I’ve read my Constitution, and it’s not in there. The closest thing I’ve found is that the President is supposed to “uphold the Law.” And, as I said before, “the Law” includes all Treaties signed… such as Geneva.

Ignoring the legal issue (where I think it’s pretty clear Bush is wrong), who the hell wants a President who thinks s/he is “above” the Law, and will put slap down laws and freedoms… supposedly to “protect” democracy. That’s known as “doublethink.” Those are two contradictory statements. Thinking them both at the same time requires you to have been brainwashed to doublethink. If you don’t know what I’m talking about: 1984, now! Read it!

Argh. I’m just pissed off. I’m going to go read. I’ll be back to rant later.

Back to my “normal” schedule

June 23rd, 2004 by Steve

We dropped Heather off at the airport this morning. Her flight should have just departed. She’ll be back home tonight. It’s kind of weird, even eerie, being alone in the house. I’ll get used to it… but I really miss her. I can’t wait to visit in August…

quick entry

June 20th, 2004 by Steve

well it’s been a week since I’ve updated; I’ve been very, very busy. And shutup dave, I know what you’re thinking!

I’ve been hanging out with Heather a lot… and a bunch of my other friends. Movies, a party, a few dinners, late nights cuddling… it’s been really great. I’m completely in love with her. And I fall for her more each and every day. It’s… just been great. The only thing I’m disappointed about is not getting to have heather and justin meet. That’s sad. Next time, I promise!!

Anyway, I’m out. I’ll talk to you all later. I’m sure I’ll have a lot to discuss when I have the time and energy.

arrrgh

June 8th, 2004 by Steve

Here’s the memo I talked about earlier. I got through the first 3 paragraphs and almost vomitted. It’s essentially explaining why we’re allowed to tortore “suspected terrorists”, the Taliban, and others. If you have any respect for human rights, proceed with caution. This may disturb or sicken you.

God Bless America

Good Article on Reagan

June 8th, 2004 by Steve

I actually thought this article was genius. It really explains Reagan’s philosophy, and why the author thinks it is wrong. Of course, he explains why this is an opinion. Nice job.

Our nation’s lawyers have gone insane

June 8th, 2004 by Steve

This… I don’t even know what to say to this. This memo was released a few days ago. Here’s a clip from the WSJ on one section:

To protect subordinates should they be charged with torture, the memo advised that Mr. Bush issue a “presidential directive or other writing” that could serve as evidence, since authority to set aside the laws is “inherent in the president.”

(emphasis mine)

Hm. really? I wasn’t aware the President had that power. In fact, I thought it was his duty to “take care that the Laws are faithfully executed.” (Art. II, sec 3 of the Constitution). I’m fairly disgusted right now about this. For an excellent analysis of this (explaining why this is complete bullshit), please check out this post by Phillip Carter.

EDIT: Just as a comment, I’d like to point out that “the Law” refers not only to federal, state, local, etc laws, but also to “the Supreme Law of the Land,” (Article VI) which includes not only the Constitution, but also ALL treaties signed. For example, the Geneva Conventions, International Court, and so forth.

I miss you…

June 7th, 2004 by Steve

First off, a belated Happy Birthday to Heather. She turned 19 on Saturday (the 5th). For those of you unaware, Heather and I live somewhat far apart; about 900 miles. We live in different time zones. Despite that difficulty, we’ve been dating for a year this Saturday (the 12th). Understandably, we only spend a very limited time together, but we treasure every moment. She’s visiting in 4 days… and staying for 11 days. At my house. My parents, surprisingly, are nice about this. I haven’t seen her in 2 months (this is why I sometimes get violent around “OMG I haven’t seen him in TWO WHOLE DAYS!! How will I survive?”). I’m counting down to when her plane lands.
